I discovered this rust spot on my parents car this morning. I guess it can be fixed. Our old Mk2 Golf didn’t have any rust despite being 15 years older than the Golf Plus.
Edit: some more pictures of it. Looks like I’m going to spend a day in summer fixing this with my dad.

Good enough to not require welding, so great! Just hit it with a wire brush and find some color match paint, otherwise it will only get worse.

That’s my father’s plan for it but it’s got rust bubbles under the paint on the wheel well. So that might be a problem (or not). I’m no expert.

It’s definately rust. The real question is how bad? Only removing the paint will tell. If you live in the rust belt I’d actually recommend putting bed liner in your wheel wells (after making sure it’s rust free of course) if it’s not a show car. It’s the best way to protect your car, and nobody except you will notice.

The car has not seen one winter under my parent’s ownership so I don’t really know why it’s rusting. And it’s only rusting on the front right wheel well. I’ll let my parents deal with this.

Only one winter? Jesus I do not envy you.
30 years, never seen any salt (we use gravel here) and not a spec of rust.

Needs to be cleaner though! Soon. Very soon.

Looks fixable without welding. Remove the rusted surface and use a zinc primer and same color paint and you should keep it from getting worse.

That’s what sovereign told me. But it’s not my car and I don’t want to eff it up and end up having to pay for it. It’s up to my parents what they’ll do with it.

Didn’t most VAG cars have a 10-year guarantee against rust? They use galvanized steel underneath it all, right?

It’s even a 12 year guarantee. But rust spots seem to be a semi-common problem on Golf Plus models. The most common spots for rust is the rear trunk right next to the license plate lights.

You must have a very dry climate! Salt is very rarely used where I am but it’s often damp and that kills your car just as effectively.

I’m actually glad I don’t live in a dry climate, I’m from Oregon and it rains all the time. But it is kept indoors.

Yup, the “correct” repair is to remove the old paint and rust and see what you’ve got.

My 2014 Focus ST had that similar issue. Something something Ford. Living on a gravel road that chewed away that paint didn't help I'm sure.

On a 2014? That sucks. We barely drive our car 1,000 miles a year, no winter driving and it’s parked in a garage but it managed to rust. Le sigh

Thats considered rust free here in Michigan
